Your First Shamanic Healing Session: Frequently Asked Questions
"Every healing journey begins with a single step, and sometimes that first step is simply asking questions."
If you're considering your first shamanic healing session, it's completely normal to have questions.
In fact, I encourage it.
Shamanic healing is unfamiliar to many people, and there's a lot of information online, some of it helpful, some of it confusing, and some that simply doesn't reflect how every practitioner works.
One of the reasons I enjoy writing these articles is to help remove some of that uncertainty. My hope is that you feel informed, comfortable, and empowered to decide whether this type of healing is right for you.
Below are the questions I hear most often from first-time clients.
What Happens During a Shamanic Healing Session?
Every practitioner approaches this work differently, so I can only speak to how I conduct my sessions.
Rather than beginning with a predetermined healing technique, we begin by just having a conversation. We talk about what has been showing up for you, what is on your heart, etc.
From there I begin by connecting with your energetic field and listening for what is asking for attention. I will perform an illumination at this point to get everything more in balance.
As the session unfolds, I work intuitively using the healing practices I've been trained in. Depending on what presents itself, your session may include energetic clearing, chakra balancing, repairing the luminous energy field, soul retrieval, or another technique that best supports your highest good.
Throughout the session, I'll explain what I'm noticing, answer your questions, and invite you to participate in the process.
No two sessions are ever exactly alike because no two people arrive with the same experiences or needs.
Do I Need to Believe in Shamanism?
No.
People come to this work from many different backgrounds and belief systems. Some have an established spiritual practice. Others simply feel curious.
You don't need to believe any particular philosophy for the session to be meaningful. An open mind and a willingness to participate are enough.
How Should I Prepare?
There isn't a long checklist.
I simply recommend arriving with an open mind and a willingness to be present. Some people like to spend a few quiet minutes reflecting beforehand or journaling about what they'd like support with. Others simply arrive as they are.
Wear comfortable clothing if your session is in person. Bring water if you'd like.
Most importantly, don't worry about saying or doing the "right" thing. There isn't one.
What Should I Bring?
For most sessions, you don't need to bring anything special.
If there is something personally meaningful that you'd like nearby, such as a journal, crystal, or small sacred object, you're welcome to bring it.
Some clients like to take notes afterward, while others prefer to simply experience the session and reflect later.
Do whatever feels supportive for you.
If we are doing remote sessions over the phone, it is always best to be in a quiet place with no distractions from electronic devices or people. This is your sacred time to be present.
Will You Tell Me Everything That's Wrong With Me?
No.
That's not how I approach this work. My role isn't to diagnose, judge, or tell you who you are.
Instead, I work with the energetic information that presents itself during the session and share what I notice in a respectful and collaborative way.
There is nothing “wrong” with you. You are perfect the way you are.
Healing is never something that's done to you. It's something we work through together.
What If I Don't Feel Anything?
This is one of the most common concerns people have before their first session.
Some people experience strong emotions. Some feel warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, or vivid imagery. Others notice very little or nothing during the session itself.
Neither experience is better than the other.
Healing doesn't always announce itself dramatically.
Sometimes the most meaningful shifts become noticeable over the days or weeks that follow.
How Will I Feel Afterward?
Everyone's experience is unique.
Many people leave feeling lighter, calmer, or more grounded. Others feel emotionally reflective or simply tired. Others feel nothing at all.
It's often helpful to give yourself a little extra space afterward.
Drink plenty of water. Spend some quiet time in nature if possible. Journal if you feel called to. Avoid filling every moment with activity.
Healing continues long after the session has ended.
Will One Session Solve Everything?
Probably not.
While some people experience significant shifts after a single session, healing is rarely a one-time event.
Life is layered. Our experiences are layered. Healing often unfolds the same way.
Sometimes one session is exactly what's needed.
Other times it becomes one step in a much longer journey of personal growth.
My personal healing journey has been ongoing my whole adult life, and I expect to continue until my end comes. Walking a path of healing and self discovery is a journey with no end in my opinion. I enjoy every step along the way.
Is Shamanic Healing Safe?
When practiced responsibly by a properly trained practitioner, shamanic healing is generally considered a complementary spiritual practice.
It is not intended to replace medical care, psychotherapy, or advice from licensed healthcare professionals.
I believe the most supportive approach to healing often includes multiple forms of care working together.
How Do I Know If This Is Right for Me?
Only you can answer that question.
If you're feeling curious, emotionally stuck, disconnected from yourself, navigating a major life transition, or simply seeking another way to support your personal growth, a session may be worth exploring.
At the same time, it's perfectly okay if you decide this isn't the right path for you.
Healing is deeply personal.
There is no single approach that's right for everyone. This is why I offer an initial free 30 minute consultation so that you can start to see if this is something aligned with your path.
A Final Thought Before Your First Session
If you're feeling nervous, know that you're not alone.
Almost everyone feels a little uncertain before trying something new.
You don't need to have the perfect questions.
You don't need to understand every healing technique.
You don't need to know exactly what you're looking for.
Simply arriving with curiosity and a willingness to explore is enough.
Healing doesn't ask us to have all the answers before we begin.
It simply asks us to take the next step.
Choosing to schedule your first shamanic healing session is a personal decision, and one that deserves thoughtful consideration.
My hope is that this article has answered some of your questions and helped you feel a little more at ease with what to expect.
Whether you decide to book a session, continue reading, or simply spend more time exploring different healing paths, trust yourself.
There is no timeline you have to follow. Healing isn't a race. It's a relationship with yourself that unfolds one step at a time.
If our paths happen to cross along the way, I'd be honored to be part of your journey.
